Osteochondrosis of cervical spine – how and what to treat with?

One of the very widespread diseases nowadays is osteochondrosis of cervical spine. How to treat the exacerbation of this extremely unpleasant illness?

Features of osteochondrosis of cervical spine

Neck osteochondrosis has a number of features comparing to lumbar and thoracic. They are defined by peculiarities of vertebrae structure in this region, as the sizes of their structures is far less small than of other spine regions’ vertebrae. It’s necessary to consider that cervical region is the most agile, and it is stressed almost always as it holds the head. Osteochondrosis usually affects the most agile segments, and this in future defines the symptoms if this disease.

Besides this, a mass of nerve and vascular formations is situated in a rather small volume – right in cervical region. Moreover, here the vertebral artery is situated, and its task is to supply the back side of brain, cerebellum and medulla with blood. That’s why at compression of vertebral artery appearance of ischemia of spinal cord and brain is possible, in acute cases this may lead to a stroke. Symptoms of this arterial involvement are ataxia, vertigo, visual and hearing impairment.

Compactness of cervical region may become a problem even at smallest dislocation of vertebra      or at muscle overstrain. As the result, compression of nerve endings or vessels may happen. And osteophytes that are formed with time, just aggravate the situation.

Osteochondrosis in cervical region also leads to arising of hernia and back protrusion that cause edema and inflammation of nervous root. As the result, the inflamed root occupies all the volume of vertebral canal and the irritation starts to appear additionally from compression in vertebral canal. Symptom of this state is pain syndrome.

Besides this, neck osteochondrosis may be the reason of spinal cord compression, in this case the affected area includes limbs (more often upper extremities) as well as head and neck.

When to start treatment?

Attempts of independent treatment of this illness – it’s an affair not too wise, considering all the possible consequences. So if you ask the question how to treat osteochondrosis of cervical spine, it’s better to apply to specialists – the can give you advices adequate to your state. Consider that full recovery is possible just at the early stage of this disease and only under control of a physician. Attempts to improve the situation independently may give an absolutely inverse effect. At later stages of the disease, the main treatment’s goal is to prevent the exacerbation and further development of the disease, as well as save a patient from excruciating pain.

Generally, treatment of neck osteochondrosis is held only after definition of precise diagnosis. At that, other factors that influence on illness development should be considered – they are vascular, hormonal, mechanical etc. Treatment always represents an entire complex of methods and means that are aimed to fight against inflammation and pain relief.

So, the complex of measures directed to treatment of osteochondrosis of cervical region usually includes:

  • anesthetic, spasmolytic and anti-inflammatory  remedies;
  • stimulants of neogenesis in combination with gels, creams and ointments containing anti-inflammatory agents;
  • manual intervention (curative gymnastics, reflexotherapy, hirudotherapy);
  • in severe cases – surgical intervention.

I think, it’s clear that independent treatment is almost impossible in this case. In some situations if the question how to treat osteochondrosis appears, one may use conventional analgesics, but this will be a temporary solution, far from the best. Treatment of this disease is urgent, earlier it is diagnosed and measures are taken, higher are the chances to full recovery.

Prevention is always better than treatment

Probably, everyone knows the old statement that it’s easier to prevent a disease than treat it. It’s more than true for osteochondrosis as well – it’s very difficult to cure it, but prevention of this disease does not offer anything difficult.

In particular, it will be enough to keep some easy rules.

  1. Not to overload spine and not to create conditions when pressure in intervertebral disks is increased. Means that it’s necessary to be attentive with vertical loading, not to make sudden movements, especially at turns with inclination, avoid falls and spine hurts and injuries, keep the back straight, control the bearing etc.
  2. Perform regularly physical exercises that are aimed to strengthen the muscular system, neck in particular.
  3. Avoid overcooling.
  4. Avoid stresses and scandals, muscle spasms are often caused right by nervous tension.
  5. Get rid of bad habits and pass to healthy eating.

There also exist a complex of simple physical exercises aimed to improve the state of muscular system and prevention of osteochondrosis of cervical region:

  1. Press your palm with your forehead, straining your neck muscles. Repeat the exercise 3 times for 7 seconds. Than press your palm with the back of your head, the same, 3 times for 7 seconds.
  2. Press your left palm with your left temple. Quantity and duration of repetitions is like in the previous exercise. Do the same for the right temple.
  3. Through your head back slightly. Then, overcoming the resistance of strained neck muscles, try to press your chin to your jugular fossa. This exercise should be repeated not less than 5 times.
  4. Hold your head and shoulders straight. Turn your head slowly 5 times to the right as much as possible. Then then same number of times – slowly to the left.
  5. Pull your chin down to your neck. Turn your head 5 times to the left, then 5 times to the right.
  6. Though your head back and try to touch your right shoulder with your right ear 5 times, then your left shoulder with your left ear 5 times.

As you may see, the complex is rather easy and can be held rapidly. In general it serves as an addition to physical exercises performed every day, aimed to maintenance and strengthening of muscle system.
